Undeniably the single most sensual step of car care—the suds, a clean aroma, cool fresh water, a nice, soft sea sponge or mitt, some good jazz—and you have the makings of a beautiful morning or afternoon spent with your car.
Truth be told, there is no "right" product, or tool or mitt to wash your car; it depends on your motivation and outlook. (What you don’t want to do is use any soap—dish soap included—that is not specifically for car paint.) Some people see this initial step of exterior care as somewhat trivial—any old car wash soap will do. For those, we offer some basic inexpensive car washes that will, indeed, wash your car. However, the higher quality, more expensive brands have a few tangible advantages: they are pH balanced which means that they won’t break down existing car wax or paint sealants already on the car, and they are formulated with lubricants, like coconut oil which encapsulate dirt particles and allow them to be harmlessly rinsed away. Chances of scratches and swirl marks are minimized. If that appeals to you and you want a total experience that delivers deeper satisfaction, the higher quality, more expensive brands also give a nicer result, more bubbles, luxuriant aroma, and a slick finish for the soul that knows how to enjoy themselves as they work.
What you use to wash your car, again, is a matter of personal preference and what works best for you. We have wash mitts of sheepskin, chenille cotton, microfiber, soft synthetics; sea sponges and wash brushes—a complete selection of top quality tools at a range of prices.
Always wash your vehicle from the top down and rinse often, to avoid contaminating your wash mitt or sponge. The bottom of the car is the dirtiest, by far, so save it for last. After you wash, dry your car with one of the towels, blades, chamois or blow-vacs in our “Drying” section to avoid water spots.
