The man behind DeWalt’s success is the namesake of the time-tested company. Raymond E DeWalt traced the footsteps of his father by working construction jobs shortly after finishing school, and like many young men during the Great Depression, he struggled to achieve the economic turnaround our nation so desperately needed. Because of the high cost of workers, Raymond was always weighing different options to increase productivity. During certain jobs, he would rig up simple machines to speed up work and reduce effort. Eventually his efforts were noticed by his peers, and he was elevated to a position at the head of a wood working mill. In those times, work simply needed to be done, and while the president of his company fought to prevent an increase in payroll, Raymond searched for solutions that would squeeze more production out of his mill.

Mr. DeWalt designed a yoke and attached it directly to a motor and saw, then mounted it on a standard arm. The saw could be raised, lowered, slid back and forth, moved to any angle, or tilted to any bevel. It did the work of four men and cut labor costs drastically.
